GLOBALISM’S CHALLENGES
The period since the end of the Cold War has not brought about either the international security or prosperity once hoped for and expected by many. This discussion will review some of the current global conflicts that appear to impede greater harmony and development. The resources for a competitive future continue to represent a challenge to the United States with fossil-fueled energy the most recent and obvious example. How will the future deal with climate change, air and water quality, and the uneven rates of economic and political development that threaten stability and security worldwide? This discussion will also raise the question about the present and future role of the United Nations. Is that body adequate for the challenges of the future? What will be the role of NATO? Finally, the dilemma of the instability of the entire Middle East will be explored as a test of the United States for global leadership in the future.
